About Us

Southern Vascular Institute was founded in 2005 to provide the most modern, comprehensive care for conditions of veins and arteries. SVI is an innovative partnership of Vascular Surgeons and Interventional Radiologists backed by a staff of expert Nurse Practitioners.

What's a Vascular Surgeon?

Vascular Surgeons are doctors who specialize in the treatment of conditions affecting the veins and arteries. Since blood flow affects nearly every part of the human body, our Vascular Surgeons treat conditions from the head down to the feet.

Using traditional surgery and in partnership with our Interventional Radiologists, our team of vascular specialists treat varicose veins, blocked arteries, aneurysms and a host of other vascular conditions. Learn more about what we do in the Services section.

Our Vascular Surgeons are board-certified by leading medical institutions including the American College of Surgeons.

What's an Interventional Radiologist?

When people think about radiology, the first word that comes to mind is "x-rays." Radiologists do indeed supervise x-rays and other types of medical imaging (including CAT scans, MRI and ultrasound), providing expert interpretation and diagnosis of the results as well as recommending appropriate treatment.

But Interventional Radiology goes beyond imaging and diagnosis to actually provide treatment of medical conditions. Very often, this treatment takes the form of image-guided, minimally-invasive procedures.

Our doctors can open clogged arteries, relieve leg pain and treat varicose veins. Interventional Radiologists can also relieve back pain, treat uterine fibroids and even kill cancerous tumors. To learn more about the things that we can do with Interventional Radiology, go to our sister site here.

Our Interventional Radiologists are certified by the leading medical communitites including the American College of Radiology, the Society for Interventional Radiology and others.

What's a Nurse Practitioner?

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are registered nurses who have completed an advanced course of study (usually a masters degree). Our NPs are nationally certified in their specialty area. The nurse practitioner delivers a unique blend of nursing and medical care.

NPs work with patients to take their medical histories and provide complete physical examinations. They also can diagnose and treat acute and chronic problems; order perform and interpret laboratory results and x-rays; prescribe medications. Along with clinical services, they focus on health promotion and disease prevention, health education and counseling, guiding patients to make smarter health and lifestyle choices.

NPs provide high-quality, cost-effective and individualized care for patients, families and communities. NPs are authorized to practice across the nation and have privileges to prescribe medications, in varying degrees in all 50 states.
